There is one sure-fire way to confirm you are in Wisconsin: look at a menu. I have included one from a small-town bar for your perusal (click to enbiggen, so you don't miss an item). In addition to the obvious entries (cheese on paper, a plate or a sandwich), there are other tale-tell signs. One is the shear variety of options, from clam strips to mini tacos and everything in between. The real giveaway, however, is just above the wings; smelt. This “delicacy” is found on a worrying number of menus in Wisconsin.
Merriam-Webster states that it has “a distinctive odor and taste.” I think they are being kind.
